Privacy policy.

Detour is built to collect as little as possible. There are no user accounts and no login. The only thing on this site that asks for a personal detail is the newsletter signup, which takes your email address and nothing else. This page explains what we collect, why, and what rights you have over it.
What we collect.
Detour doesn't have user accounts, and the only personal detail we ask for anywhere on the site is your email address, and only if you choose to sign up for the newsletter (see below).
We use Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights, privacy-friendly tools built into the platform that hosts this site, to see which posts are useful and how fast pages load. Neither uses cookies or any other persistent identifier on your device, and neither tracks you across other websites. Because nothing is stored on your device and no individual visitor is identified, there's no cookie banner on Detour and nothing for you to opt in or out of.
Vercel Analytics records anonymised, aggregated data: which pages are viewed, the site or search engine you arrived from, and coarse details like country, device type and browser. Vercel Speed Insights records how quickly pages actually load for readers (Core Web Vitals), attributed to a page, not a person. In both cases, your IP address is used only momentarily, to work out that country-level location, and is not stored. On post pages, Analytics also records two events, that a post was viewed, and when you click an outbound link inside one (for example, to a ticket seller or airline), tagged with the post and the destination link, never with anything that identifies you personally. This data is processed by Vercel Inc., who host this website, and is only ever used in aggregate; we can't use it to pick out an individual visitor.
If you email us at hello@godetour.co.uk, we'll obviously have your email address and whatever you tell us. We use that only to reply to you, and don't add it to any list or share it on.
The newsletter.
If you sign up for the newsletter, we collect your email address so we can send you the monthly Detour email. That's the only thing we collect. We don't ask for your name or anything else.
We rely on your consent as our lawful basis for sending it, which you give by entering your email and then confirming it. We use double opt-in: after you sign up, we send you a confirmation email, and you're only added to the list once you click the link in it. This makes sure nobody can be signed up without their say-so. When you use the signup form, we also briefly process limited technical information, including your IP address, to stop the form being abused or spammed. We rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure for this, and we don't use it for anything else.
Your email address is stored and the newsletter is sent using Resend, an email service that acts as our processor, meaning they handle the list on our behalf and don't use it for anything of their own. Resend is a US-based company, so your email address may be processed outside the UK; where that happens, it's covered by the safeguards UK data protection law requires for international transfers.
You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every newsletter, which takes effect immediately and removes you from the list. We keep your email address on the list until you unsubscribe, after which it's removed. We don't use your email for anything other than sending the newsletter, and we never sell it or share it with anyone else.
Third-party links.
Most links on Detour lead to third parties, ticket sellers, airlines, booking sites and hotels, so we can point you to the actual thing you'd be buying. Some of these are affiliate links; see our affiliate disclosurefor how that works. Once you click through to one of those sites, you're subject to their own privacy policy, not this one. We don't control what they collect and can't speak for how they handle your data. Check their policy directly if you're unsure.
Your rights.
Because we don't hold accounts or profiles on individual readers, the only personal data we're likely to hold about you is your email address, and only if you've signed up for the newsletter or emailed us. Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy of it
- ask us to correct anything that's inaccurate
- ask us to delete data we hold about you (for the newsletter, unsubscribing does this, but you can also ask us directly)
- withdraw your consent to the newsletter at any time, which you can do by unsubscribing
- object to how we're using it, or ask us to restrict that use
- complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) if you think we've got it wrong

Changes to this policy.
